Are you planning on renting out a small apartment or studio flat? You have a room in your property that is small in size and therefore you want some home decor tricks that expand the space? We have tried to come up with ideas that do not require a huge financial investment, but still contribute to making the apartment look more homey and, most importantly, more spacious.

What colors to use in the apartment?

It is the best to think in light colors. If we choose very dark or characteristic, deep colors when painting, it will narrow down the already not very spacious apartment. Don’t try to see how a black wall would show in a tiny, traditional-height flat.

We recommend white and the different shades of white as the color for the walls. This recommendation could be a rule when it comes to small apartments.

Pastel-colored furnitures go very well with the white walls, but make sure that it doesn’t get too girly. Pastel-colored pieces of furniture harmonize well with white walls, the less defined contours further enhance the feeling of spaciousness.

Mirrors „everywhere”

Mirrors reflect the natural light that enters the apartment and it increases the appearance of spaciousness even in smaller spaces. With well-chosen mirrors, we can achieve magical results. You can choose from countless of solutions:  long and narrow, oval, minimalist framed, carved wooden framed mirror in a baroque gilded frame, and the list goes on.

Try different mirrors, there may even be a suitable piece for other places of the apartment as well! It can help a lot if the door of the built-in cabinet or wardrobe is designed to be mirrored to the bottom.

Multifunctional furnitures

Give us some time to think about the furnishing of our apartment! If there are more furnitures than needed, small homes can inevitably seem overcrowded. It is the best to choose only a few pieces that willl be put in our apartment. When choosing furniture, avoid colors that are too dark, and try to choose multifunctional pieces (coffee table with storage function, pull-out sofa that can also be used as a guest bed). Mobilization can be important as well, for example  wall-mounted, folding dining table, folding chairs.

Curtains and rugs

The basic guiding principle to prefer light shades also occurs when choosing the color of carpets and rugs. In case of a traditional ceiling-hight apartment, a useful tip for curtains is to lower the curtain to the floor. With this trick the ceiling height will seem higher. Make the curtain rod a little wider than the window, so it will look wider.

As a conclusion, let’s talk about the question of lighting. It is very important for all apartments to have adequate light sources, and this is even more important in small apartments. There is nothing more depressing than a poorly lit small apartment. Even the most beautifully furnished studio will be less attractive on a winter evening with dim lighting. Don’t skimp on the lights!
